How to Choose the Right Contractor for You
Be sure to check that your contractor is licensed with a current, up-to-date license. Choosing a local contractor that serves your area is another way to choose a qualified provider. Also, by hiring a local contractor, you can ask to speak to some of their customers or ask for references of previous customers. You'll also want to get a written guarantee from your contractor. This will help you establish any product or service warranties they may offer. A written contract should also detail what your contractor will include for the price during their service call.
Choosing the right contractor to install and maintain your heating and air conditioning equipment will ensure your family's home is safe and comfortable--no matter what the weather brings. Click here to learn more about how to choose the right contractor for you.
How to Prepare Your Home for Winter Weather
As October nears, it certainly isn't too early to start thinking about cooler temperatures. Regardless of where you live, you could still experience colder weather. It's a good idea to prepare your home for winter and to get the most out of your home's energy costs.
Exterior of Home:
• Check the exterior of your home. Caulk the perimeter of windows to maintain a tighter seal. This will help keep cool air out and warm air inside.
• If you have cracked or broken glass in any of your windows, consider replacing with a new window.
• If you have a basement, check the windows for any cracks or possible air leaks.
• Use weather stripping around door areas that are exposed.
Make sure your water hose isn't attached to the exterior faucet on your house. This could freeze and burst in colder temperatures.
• Contact your local HVAC company to have your furnace inspected and cleaned.
• Make sure there aren't exposed areas where 'unwelcomed pests' could enter your basement or home.
Interior of Home:
• If you don't already have a programmable thermostat, ask a professional about all of the benefits.
• Change out your furnace filters. If you aren't sure how to do this task, ask a professional for assistance.
• Check your smoke detectors and ensure they are in working order with new batteries. Same goes for carbon monoxide detectors.
• If you have a fireplace, this is a good time to inspect it to ensure it is ready to help heat your home. If it is in need of cleaning, ask a professional before the cold weather hits.
• Prepare an emergency kit with flashlights, batteries, extra blankets, bottled water, and non-perishable food items. Also, a good idea to keep pertinent medicines on hand.
We're always happy to answer any questions you may have regarding preparing your home's HVAC for harsher weather. If you would like, we'll even perform a FREE home energy audit to let you know ways to save on your home's energy bills!
