Five Reasons to Shop Small Business Saturday

Matthew Stewart - Sunday, November 24, 2013

If you plan to start your holiday shopping this weekend, don’t forget to buy a cup of joe at a Hickory area coffee shop, and visit other stores that are close to home. This Saturday is Small Business Saturday -  a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities.  Here are just a few reasons to shop local:

1. Money Back into the Community - One study shows $45 of every $100 spent at small, local businesses stays in the local economy. The money you spend is reinvested into schools, taxes and other community needs.

2. More Jobs - Locally owned businesses create more jobs for the people who live there.

3. Environmental Sustainability - Local stores and restaurants help to sustain vibrant, walkable town centers which are essential to reducing sprawl, automobile use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution.

4. Product Diversity - Most small businesses select their product offerings based on their own interests and the needs of customers, allowing them to offer more unique choices than bigger stores.

5. Customer Service - Good customer service is hard to find during the holidays because retail employees are often stretched thin and busy with other customers.  Small businesses offer knowledgeable, personalized help in a less crowded environment.

Small Business Saturday was started in 2010 by American Express. The credit card company says the event brings $5.5 billion in revenue to small businesses throughout the country. If you register your AMEX card and use it in participating stores and restaurants, you’ll receive a $10 credit on your AMEX bill.

Click here for a list of participating shops and restaurants in the Hickory area.

We are proud to be a small business serving Hickory and the surrounding areas and support our local community businesses. Please give us a call if we can help you keep your home warm this holiday season.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at 72 Degrees of Hickory!

We Salute Our Veterans

Matthew Stewart - Sunday, November 10, 2013

We’d like to send a big thank you to all the men and women who have served or are serving our country. Whether you’re working today or plan to attend one of the many local Veterans Day events, be sure to take a moment to show your appreciation for those who fight for our freedom.

Local Events

The Greater Hickory Metropolitan Community Veterans Day Ceremony, 6:00 p.m. Hickory Elks Lodge #1654, 356 Main Ave. NW, Hickory

Alexander County Veterans Day Celebration, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., ACHS Auditorium, 223 School Drive, Taylorsville

American Legion Post 86 Veterans Day Program, 11:00 a.m., at the Cornelius Veteran's Monument at Rotary Plaza and the Cornelius Town Hall lawn.

If you plan to display an American flag, please keep in mind the Flag Code guidelines. The flag:

   - Should be lighted at all times, either by sunlight or by an appropriate light source.

    - Should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.

    - Should not be used for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.

    - Should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard.

    - Should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.

    - Should never have any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind placed on it, or attached to it.

    - Should never be used for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

    - Should not touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms.

    - To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously.

    - Should be cleaned and mended when necessary.

From all of us at 72 Degrees of Hickory, have a safe and happy Veterans Day!

National Energy Awareness Month

Matthew Stewart - Saturday, September 28, 2013

Have you thought about how much energy your home uses lately? Well, October is National Energy Awareness Month, so now is a great time to start. If you think you’ve been using more energy than necessary, learning how to manage your home’s heating and cooling zone may be just the solution you need.

Knowing how to keep your home’s temperature efficient through zoning can not only save on energy, but also on money. And now that fall has begun and the weather can rapidly change, zoning will keep costs to a minimum.

So what is zoning, exactly? A zoning system lets you have control over temperatures in different rooms individually instead of the house as a whole. So when you’re in one room, set the temperature to your liking, but when you leave that room be sure to turn off the air conditioning or heat. If you’re diligent about using your zoning system, it can really make a difference for your home’s energy and your wallet.

Autumn Is Here

Matthew Stewart - Saturday, September 21, 2013

Tomorrow, September 22, autumn will officially begin. Now the leaves will begin to change, pumpkin patches will sprout up, and the air will become cool and crisp.

Soon, though, the weather will grow colder, and you want to make sure your home’s heating system is ready for whatever elements autumn and winter will bring. Make sure to schedule a furnace tune-up inspection, which will keep your heating unit in good shape throughout the cold months.

At 72 Degrees, our professionals will do a 60-90 minute precision tune-up, which goes through 17 steps and ensures that your heating system is safe and efficient and won’t break down when you need it the most. To see all the details of a tune-up and safety inspection, click here. Don’t hesitate to contact us today. Hot chocolate and pumpkin carving, here we come!

We Remember 9-11

Matthew Stewart - Friday, September 13, 2013

No one will ever forget where they were the morning of September 11, 2001. This past Wednesday marked the 12th anniversary of the tragic day that has gone down in history as the “day the world stopped.”

Countless memorials remember and honor policemen, firemen, and citizens who risked — and often gave — their lives to save others. We want to thank everyone who bravely served our nation that day and every day. They are real-life superheroes, for which we are truly grateful.

So from all of us at 72 Degrees, thank you!

Hooray for National Grandparents Day

Matthew Stewart - Monday, September 09, 2013

Yesterday, the first Sunday after Labor Day, was National Grandparent’s Day! After all, grandparents do so much for us, so it only seems fitting to honor them in this way. They give us love, wisdom, and hugs that only a grandparent can give.

This special holiday was created in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter and has stuck ever since. Let's keep the spirit of this day alive all year and show them how much they mean to us every day.

From all of us at 72 Degrees, we wish all the grandparents out there a joy-filled year!

Celebrate Labor Day Weekend

Matthew Stewart - Monday, September 02, 2013

We know you work hard, and you deserve a break! Most Americans work over 40 hours a week, which often leads to stress and exhaustion. Labor Day, the first Monday in September, was created back in 1882 to be a holiday that would honor all working U.S. citizens and give them a day off. It was also a victory for workers’ conditions, pay, and rights.

Americans celebrated the very first Labor Day with a parade and fireworks, which is a tradition that largely carries on today. Other common ways to celebrate the holiday include vacation, picnics, barbecues, lounging by the pool, and relaxing with friends and family.

At 72 Degrees, we’d like to wish everyone a safe and fun Labor Day weekend! Don’t hesitate to contact us if you’re experiencing any heating or cooling problems!
